Meet Buttercup
We asked Tabitha how her dog Buttercup came into her life. She told us, “Buttercup was given to me by my cousin when I was a senior in high school. My cousin didn’t have time or patience for a boisterous Golden Retriever but wanted her to go to someone who would love and care for her.”

Sometimes It Takes a Lot of Training
Tabitha told us about her first encounter with Buttercup. “I fell in love with my gorgeous girl immediately! She didn’t have any training so it took a lot of work to get our exuberant pup to focus and learn how to behave herself. She didn’t even know how to jump in a car and the first time we brought her out she just shuffled her little paws and gave me a very confused look before awkwardly clambering onto the floorboards.

Once we passed over that milestone she went everywhere with me. I would take her to swim at the lake or beach, hang out with friends, go hiking or even just drive around so she could hang her head out the window. It wasn’t always perfect because I do remember waking up to her drinking out of my bedside water glass and realizing that she’d probably been doing it for months. There was the night she ate my wall and comforter or buried every single one her toys in the giant pile of red dirt we had while landscaping. Now she is a well-behaved lady that offers hi-fives and kisses.”

A Day in the Life of Buttercup
Tabitha told us, “The senior Buttercup is much more sedate than her puppy days but still active and fun. I start the day by going to her bed to wake her up with a belly rub and an Eskimo kiss. She is a sleepy-head and will stay in bed for about 20 more minutes at which point I jingle her collar (she sleeps without it) to get her excited for potty time. When she comes in I warm up some water to put in her Blue Buffalo kibble and toss in her vitamins. If I don’t have to go to work we spend a few hours at the beach and I give my throwing arm a really good workout. When I have errands to run she loves to come with me so she can stick her head out the window and roll around in the back of the Tahoe. Other than that she snuggles on the couch with me while I study with frequent breaks to go walking outside.”

A Well-Traveled Pup
As it turns out, this lucky dog as been all over the country. Tabitha told us, “Buttercup loves to go everywhere and see everyone. She loves to swim and has been to beaches on the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. We’ve been on road trips from TX to CA and up and down both East and West Coasts (CA to WA & FL to NY). She has even taken a plane trip to go visit my brother for a while. Most recently my boyfriend and I drove from FL to upstate NY to spend the holidays with his family. Buttercup got to “High-Point” Delaware with us and got to run around in the snow with his parents’ Yellow Lab, Ella. Of course Buttercup loved to snuggle with my boyfriend’s mom on the couch and when Ella was jealous she would squeeze her way in between them.”

On Her Best Behavior
Despite being the favorite, Buttercup still has her rules. “She does not rule the house, but she does get a lot of spoiling because it is just she and I at home. Having said that she is so sweet and so well behaved that it is easy to spoil her with weekly trips to the beach, peanut butter treats and snuggle time. I even sew all the squeakers back into her stuffed toys. In return she tries her very best to be well behaved,” Tabitha said.

Everybody’s Favorite
“Buttercup is the sweetest dog in the world,” Tabitha beamed. “Everyone that meets her falls in love and every dog that plays with her wants to be her best bud. When we take her to pet friendly stores like Bass Pro Shop she develops an entourage of people (especially little kids) who come up to us and want to love on her. There have been people, on more than one occasion, who admit to being terrified of dogs that will timidly come up to pet her. It is just amazing to have such a fun, sweet dog that everyone can love.”

Buttercup the Pie-Eyed Puppy
We asked Tabitha about some of her best memories of Buttercup. She responded, “My favorite story is the reason that she knows the command “Stay out of the Kitchen”. The day before Thanksgiving we were baking pies and my mom had just set a blazing hot pecan pie on the island to cool. Buttercup was still about a year old and had never really shown any interest in food in the kitchen before so we thought nothing about leaving the room for a minute or two. When we heard a strange noise we rushed into the kitchen and found young Buttercup with one back paw balancing on the trashcan, the other dangling in mid-air, both front paws gripping the edges of the counter and her face buried in the pecan pie. In just a few minutes she had devoured over half of the pie and wasn’t even sick! She just kept wagging her tail in between her legs with this half satisfied/half remorseful look on her face. It was so hard to keep a straight face!”

Buttercup and BLUE
Tabitha told us, “Buttercup has been eating Blue for about 5 years now and she especially loves it when I stir in about ½ a cup of warm water and stir it up. At 11 years old she is still boisterous and playful with a beautiful, healthy looking coat. Everyone is always telling me how young she looks and I know I can’t take all the credit so I always mention Blue Buffalo!”
