| Meet Ophelia |
When Ophelia met her pet parent, Melanie, she was so young that she was still attached to her umbilical cord. "I was getting another cat spayed at my vet," Melanie explains, and the receptionist presented three kittens in a box still with their umbilical cords attached.
"Someone was going to throw them in the
dumpster, but had a change of heart."
"They told me that someone was going to throw them in the dumpster, but had a change of heart and dropped them off at the vet's office. They asked if I would take care of them," Melanie continues. "So I decided to take them home to bottle-feed them every 3-4 hours." Melanie would eventually find homes for the other two kittens, but Ophelia was there to stay...and to rule.
Cute, Cuddly - and Commanding
Perhaps because of the early care she received from Melanie, Ophelia still loves (and commands!) attention. Ophelia is irresistibly "cute and cuddly," but she is "a very vociferous cat when you are doing something she does not prefer," says Melanie, "and there is a lot she does not prefer."
"Ophelia certainly has me trained."

"When I am trying to do practically anything," says Melanie, "she jumps up on my lap. If I move her or try to do anything, I get a strong meow. If I am trying to read or work on my laptop, she tries to sit on whatever I am doing. Occasionally, if I am on the phone, she tries to weigh in on the conversation or knock something over. Ophelia certainly has me trained," Melanie confesses.
A Laundry Loving Cat
Ophelia is a cuddler. She will even cozy up to a newspaper. "She snuggles and scratches any newspaper I have brought into the house," says Melanie, "which does make it hard to read."
Ophelia also loves jumping into a basket of freshly laundered clothes that are still warm. "She will burrow deep into the pile of clothes and then pop her head out on the other side," says Melanie.
Ophelia, Night and Day
Ophelia begins her day with a good night's rest. "She wakes up in the morning after sleeping on me most of the night," says Melanie. "During the night, if she is cold," she continues, "she will lightly scratch my face so I will tuck her under the blanket with me. She likes to be petted and have her back scratched whenever she sees me. She might play around a bit upon wakening and then end up on the bed or sofa napping."
Ophelia doesn't spend all her time resting, though. Occasionally, says Melanie, she will suddenly "run around the house spontaneously." She also "makes an attempt to chew on the indoor plants a bit or sneak into the closet." But Ophelia's main interests seems to be Melanie. "If I go to sit somewhere she will fall asleep on my lap. At the end of the day, if she sees me going off to bed, she follows behind."
The Sisterhood of the
Traveling Pajama Pants
For a while, it seemed that Melanie had a partner who shared her pajama pants when Melanie wasn't wearing them. "I had a pair of pajama pants with a drawstring that I used to wear," Melanie explains. Melanie didn't realize Ophelia liked to play with them until they started moving around the house. "She had an unusual routine of pouncing and playing with the drawstring and then dragging the pants around the house," Melanie says. "I would put them one place and find them on the other side of the room or somewhere downstairs.
"Ophelia had pulled the pants down... and locked herself in the bathroom!"
"One day," Melanie continues, "I hung the pants on the door of the bathroom. We found Ophelia had pulled the pants down likely after much ado and locked herself in the bathroom!"
Ophelia and BLUE
"I switched to BLUE because it has much better ingredients — no chicken by-product meals and no fillers. Ophelia does like it and there was no difficulty with the switch. Ophelia is getting older and I know that good nutrition will help her stay healthy."
